What we offer

What you'll find here

A café and a country store in one. Everything we serve is homemade, and our menu is not one you will find anywhere else.

Cinnamon buns, skoleboller and iced cinnamon swirls on the counter

Home baking, cakes & hot lunches

We do our own baking and fill the counter with fresh bakes and delicious cakes. For lunch the menu has homemade food, with an emphasis on Norwegian and northern Norwegian dishes. Everything here should taste properly good – like food made with time, care and good ingredients.

A pot of fårikål, mutton and cabbage stew, on a laid table with potatoes, carrots and lingonberries

Søstrene's Sunday dinner

On the first Sunday of the month we invite you to traditional Norwegian home cooking and good meals around the table. Norwegian food traditions and good ingredients take centre stage, and we serve food that gives you both a taste of tradition and the feeling of being at home. No booking needed; we serve until the pot is empty.

Bottles of apple and berry cordial and local sauces on the shelf

Local produce & good flavours

In the country store you will find cordials, juices, sauces, honey, coffee, cured meats and chocolate from small Norwegian producers. We care about quality and good flavours, and about showcasing producers who make food with pride.

Knitted sweaters with Nordic patterns on a rack in the country store

Country store & handicrafts

You will also find textiles, small gifts and handicrafts with a Nordic and northern Norwegian touch. We want to offer goods with character, history and quality – lovely mementos of your visit or something nice to take home.

Our story

The story of Søstrene

Søstrene Kafé og Landhandleri opened in December 2023 in the community hall in Tromvik. We wanted to bring life and activity to the outer coast of Kvaløya and create a meeting place for locals, visitors and tourists alike – somewhere people could get together over good food, fresh baking and a cup of coffee.

From the start, the idea has been to celebrate Norwegian food, and northern Norwegian food above all. We love homemade meals, freshly baked bread, the smell of cakes straight from the oven and traditional dishes made from good ingredients. For us it is about keeping our food traditions alive, serving meals people remember and giving our guests a taste of northern Norway.

In summer 2026 we began a new chapter and moved the café out to the sandy beach in Grøtfjord. With majestic mountains around us and the sea right outside the door, we welcome familiar faces and new guests alike to homemade food, good conversation and laughter around the tables.

We want to be a lively meeting place that brings people together and gives them something good to remember.

Grøtfjord

Discover Grøtfjord – true northern Norwegian nature

Welcome to Grøtfjord, a small village on the outer coast of Kvaløya, surrounded by towering mountains, open sea and some of the most beautiful coastline in northern Norway. This is where you meet the dramatic nature that makes the Tromsø region so special, with a white sandy beach, crystal-clear water and views of the ocean and the islands beyond.

Beach life, surfing and kiting

The beach in Grøtfjord is a natural gathering place for locals and visitors alike. The wide sandy beach and open landscape invite you to take a walk, take photos, have a picnic or simply enjoy a quiet moment by the sea. On warm summer days it is a popular spot for an outing, and the long, light evenings leave plenty of time to take it all in.

If you are after more speed and excitement, the coast also offers surfing and other water sports. When the waves and wind are right, Grøtfjord can be an exciting place to surf, and to kite when the weather and local conditions allow. The sea and weather on the outer coast of Kvaløya can change quickly, so these activities call for the right gear, experience and respect for the elements.

Mountain hikes with a view

The mountains around Grøtfjord offer great opportunities to experience northern Norway on foot. There are hikes for every level, from shorter walks with views over the fjord to more demanding mountain trips in the distinctive coastal landscape.

A hike up Smørstabben is a good choice if you want a view over the fjord and the surrounding mountains. For more experienced hikers, the area offers bigger challenges and spectacular views of the sea, the fjords and the alpine peaks.

Take the season, the weather and the trail conditions into account when you plan your hike. Mountain weather in the north can change quickly, so choose a route that suits both your experience and the conditions on the day.

Midnight sun, northern lights and Arctic experiences

There is something special about Grøtfjord. In summer the midnight sun gives long, light days and evenings when you can enjoy nature well into the night. When autumn and winter arrive, darkness settles over the mountains, and conditions may be just right for one of northern Norway's most spectacular natural sights: the northern lights.

Grøtfjord is a great place to look for the northern lights, especially on clear evenings. Here you can see them dancing over the sea and the mountains, far from the city lights. The northern lights can never be guaranteed, but with a dark sky, the right weather and a little patience, it could be a memory for life.

Welcome to Søstrene

Perhaps you come to Grøtfjord to go hiking, surfing or take photos, to see the midnight sun or to chase the northern lights. Perhaps you just want a break from everyday life and to enjoy the view. Whatever brings you here, we hope you get to experience some of the best northern Norway has to offer.

And when you need something warm to drink, you are welcome at Søstrene Kafé og Landhandleri for homemade food, fresh baking, delicious cakes and genuine northern Norwegian hospitality.
